World’s leading educators of the Deaf to speak in New Zealand

Some of the world’s experts on Deaf Education will gather in New Zealand to speak at the Australia New Zealand Conference for Educators of the Deaf in January 2006.

The interactive forum aims to identify and address issues facing current and future Deaf students in New Zealand and Australia.

It is the first time in 20 years that the tri-annual conference will be held in New Zealand.

ANZCED convenor, David Foster, says the conference is an exciting opportunity to unite all individuals and groups involved in Deaf Education.

David points out that the conference is not just aimed at professionals working in the education sector but also parents and caregivers of deaf children.

Parents of deaf children are set to benefit from attending because the partnership between parents and teachers is a vital part of a child’s educational experience.

“We are committed to parents having full access to information that could improve opportunities and outcomes for their family.

“Also in the partnership equation are Deaf people themselves, who also have a vested interest in the education of deaf children.”

“The conference is a great chance to gain valuable knowledge from the international keynote speakers and also strengthen relationships between New Zealand and Australia’s Deaf Education community.”

“The theme aims to challenge and extend our knowledge about how to continually create a successful and positive learning environment for current and future Deaf students.”

International keynote speakers include Mary Pat Moeller from Boys Town National Research Hospital –US, Joe McLaughlin, Dean of Deaf Studies and Special Services – US, Tyron Woolfe from University College – London, Marc Marschark from the National Technical Institute for Deaf – US and Linda Byrnes, Student Support Coordinator for Disability Programmes – Australia.

The Australia New Zealand Conference for Educators of the Deaf will be held in January 11-14 2006 at the Royal Lakeside Novotel, Rotorua.
