Volleyball: USA Beach Teams Earn Silver, Bronze Medals at 2005 Deaflympics

MELBOURNE, Australia – The United States earned a pair of medals Sunday at the 2005 Deaflympics, with the men's beach volleyball team settling for the silver medal and the women's beach volleyball team taking the bronze medal.

The USA men, Michael Bruning (Tucson, Ariz.) and Scott Majorino (Mission Viejo, Calif.), lost in Sunday's gold medal match to Russia, 2-0.

Bruning and Majorino earned a trip to the championship match by posting a pair of wins on Saturday (2-0 over Brazil and 2-1 over Russia) to finish pool play as the No. 1 seed with a perfect 6-0 record.

In the men's beach bronze medal match, Ukraine defeated Belgium, 2-0.

The USA women's beach team, Tamijo Foronda (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) and Sarah Parker (Saratoga Springs, Utah), defeated Belarus in straight-sets on Sunday to capture the bronze medal.

Foronda and Parker went 2-1 in three matches on Saturday to finish pool play with a record of 5-2 and in fourth place. They beat Switzerland (2-0), lost to Urkraine (0-2) and swept Australia (2-0).

In the women's beach gold medal match, Ukraine defeated Russia, 2-0.

Indoors, the USA women lost to Ukraine on Saturday (1-3, 16-25, 25-21, 21-25, 18-25) and swept Italy on Sunday (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) to improve to 3-1 overall, good enough for third place in pool play. The women play Japan on Monday.

The USA men lost to Russia on Saturday (1-3, 19-25, 25-21, 20-25, 19-25) and to Italy on Sunday (20-25, 12-25, 19-25) to fall to 1-3 overall. The men, who play Ghana on Monday, sit in fourth place in Pool B.
