THREE quarters of small to medium businesses in Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear are at risk of court action under the Disability Discrimination Act.

Research by the Royal National Institute for the Deaf shows that 75% of the businesses had not made changes so and hard of hearing people to access their products or services. This means thousands of businesses are at risk of court action under the new disability legislation.

Only 31% of businesses questioned in the North of England were aware of the implications of the DDA, and only a few had taken any practical steps to help deaf and hard of hearing customers use their services.
