Nanaimo residents are encouraged to silently trudge along the trails of Westwood Lake Park this Saturday in support of B.C. deaf and hard-of-hearing athletes.

The B.C. Deaf Sports Federation is hosting its annual Silent Walk and Run in Nanaimo Saturday (Sept. 29). It’s the second run held in Nanaimo and the 19th the federation has held in B.C. Money raised during the event helps support deaf and hard-of-hearing children and youth participate in training camps to develop their athletic skills to prepare for competition in future sporting events such as the deaf Olympics. It also helps athletes participate in provincial and national competitions and provide money for coaching fees, interpretation fees, equipment and travel costs.

Check-in begins at 1 p.m., a warm-up is at 1:45 p.m. , and the walkers and runners beginning their trek at 2 p.m. Registration is $30 for adults, $25 for seniors, $20 for students and children 12 and under are free. Federation members receive a $5 discount. People who raise more than $300 in pledges will be entered into a prize draw.
