Maryland School for the Deaf celebrates commencement

Thirty-three students graduated from the Maryland School for the Deaf at a graduation ceremony on Saturday.

The ceremony included speeches from seniors Zachary Ennis and Michelle Lapides. The class valedictorian was Noe Turcios.

Most of the school’s graduates will continue their education. Many plan to attend Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.; the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York; the South West Collegiate Institute for the Deaf at Howard College in Texas; or various community colleges.

The number of graduates from the school is similar to previous years. In 2006, 23 students graduated from the school; 38 students graduated in 2005.

Established in 1868, Maryland School for the Deaf serves about 500 deaf and hard of hearing students in kindergarten through 12th grades at its Frederick and Columbia campuses. The school also provides services for newborns up to 21-year-olds.

The school’s Frederick campus is located at 101 Clarke Place.
