The University of Akron has been awarded a $172,264 grant from the U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton announced today.

The grant will fund training for speech language pathologists over the next four years in a combined program conducted by the University of Akron and Kent State University.

``The University of Akron's work helping deaf and hearing-impaired children is truly inspiring,'' Sutton said in a prepared statement. ``The Department of Education clearly recognizes the contributions the University of Akron and Kent State are making, and this grant will enable their talented faculty and staff to continue providing invaluable leadership in this very important field.''

The grant will support special course work for 24 trainees, 12 from UA and 12 from KSU, over four years to assist them in the completion of their professional training. The training will focus on advanced technologies, such as modern hearing aids and cochlear implants. It also will focus on the special training needs for treating newborns.
