From: Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, NY - Apr 6, 2007

April 6, 2007 11:18 am — The controversy concerning cochlear implants — devices surgically implanted that allow some deaf people to hear sounds — will be discussed April 19 at the annual Lyon Daughters Lecture.

“Cochlear Implants: Cool or Not So Cool?” will be presented by two professors from Gallaudet University at 7 p.m. at the Rochester Academy of Medicine, 1441 East Ave.

Irene Leigh and John Christiansen will discuss the social, cultural and ethical issues about cochlear implants. Both are deaf and Christiansen has had a cochlear implant for six years.

The lecture, sponsored by the Rochester Academy of Medicine, is free and open to the public.

Sign language interpreters and captioning will be provided.
