EVENT: National Archives Panel Discussion on 'Through Deaf Eyes'
DATE: March 21, 2007
TIME: Noon
LOCATION: The William G. McGowan Theater
National Archives
700 Constitution Avenue, NW
Washington, DC

NOTE: In conjunction with the world premiere of the historic documentary, “Through Deaf Eyes,” the National Archives will host a panel discussion on the employment and accommodation for deaf people in the Federal Government.

The event takes place noon, March 21 in the National Archives’ William G. McGowan Theater. Later that evening, PBS will air “Through Deaf Eyes,” the first comprehensive film on deaf history. The documentary chronicles 200 years of deaf life in America, highlighting shared experiences of American history – family life, education, work, and community connections – from the perspective of deaf citizens. Interviews include community leaders, historians, and deaf Americans with diverse views on language use, technology and identity.

The National Archives event, presented in partnership with WETA and Gallaudet University, is free and open to the public. The National Archives is fully accessible, and there will be a sign language interpreter at this event.

The discussion panel includes:
* Karen Kenton, Executive Producer of Through Deaf Eyes;
* Nancy J. Bloch, Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of the Deaf;
* Robert M. Buchanan, author of Illusions of Equality: Deaf Americans in School and Factory
* Paul Singleton, a team leader with the Department of Defense's Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program.

Mr. Robert Jew, Director of the National Archives' EEO and Diversity programs, will introduce the program, and several film excerpts will be shown.
