DANVERS - The Heritage Salem Five Charitable Foundation has donated $10,500 to the New England Homes for the Deaf.

The donation will help to defray costs from the Nov. 22 Danversport explosion, which temporarily displaced nearly 60 deaf and deaf-blind residents from the Homes for the Deaf and damaged the facilities.

"Supporting charitable causes is what (the) Foundation is about," said Peter Copelas, vice chairman of Salem Five.

The New England Homes for the Deaf - a nonprofit agency founded in 1901 - is one of only two nursing home and independent-living communities for the deaf in the United States, according to Barry Zeltzer, executive director of the Homes for the Deaf.

The Heritage Salem Five Charitable Foundation was created upon the merger of the Heritage Co-operative Bank with Salem Five in 2006.
