ERIC HOLDER TO LEAD INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGED USE OF EXCESSIVE FORCE BY GALLAUDET OFFICERS

The Board of Trustees of Gallaudet University today announced that it has retained Eric H. Holder, Jr. to head an investigation into allegations against its Department of Public Service (DPS). Holder, a former U.S. Deputy Attorney General and currently a partner at Covington & Burling LLP, an internationally recognized law firm headquartered in Washington, D.C, will review the allegations that Gallaudet University’s security officers acted with excessive force when responding to a bomb threat on campus during the takeover by students of Hall Memorial Building.

Gallaudet University President I. King Jordan, President Designate Jane Fernandes and Board of Trustees Chair Brenda J. Brueggemann issued a joint statement welcoming Mr. Holder’s appointment. "Mr. Holder’s reputation for thoroughness and integrity and his distinguished public service record make him the ideal person to conduct this independent review," said Dr. Brueggemann.

"We believe our officers acted responsibly with our students and welcome this investigation," said Dr. Jordan.

"Mr. Holder will have our complete cooperation in his investigation," said Dr. Fernandes.

The investigation is expected to begin promptly and will be completed as soon as possible. At the conclusion of the investigation, Mr. Holder intends to release to the public the written findings of the investigation.

During his career, Mr. Holder has held impressive government positions including U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia and Deputy Attorney General, the second highest position in the U.S. Department of Justice.
