ROCHESTER, N.Y., Sept. 6—The National Technical Institute for the Deaf, a college of Rochester Institute of Technology, has appointed Eastman Kodak Company executive Mary Jane Hellyar as NTID Foundation Board chairperson. Hellyar is president of Kodak’s Film & Photofinishing Systems Group, one of four major business segments within the company.

The NTID Foundation Board of Directors works to advance career development and personal growth opportunities for deaf students enrolled at RIT/NTID, through identifying charitable gift opportunities, job placement opportunities, and promoting NTID’s marketing efforts.

Hellyar, a Minnesota native, joined Kodak in 1982 as a research scientist. She also served as an engineer for motion picture products, director of the Chemicals Development Division, general manager of the Consumer Film Business, and head of the Display and Components Group.

In 2005 she was elected a senior vice president of Kodak and later was named president of the Film & Photofinishing Group with continuing responsibilities for Kodak’s Display business.

Hellyar has a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology; master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering and Business Management also from MIT; and a B.A. in Chemistry and Mathematics from the College of St. Catherine, in Minnesota.

She serves as Management Champion for Veterans at Kodak and on the board for the Women’s Forum, an employee network at Kodak. She also serves on the board of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering. In recognition of her leadership and achievements she was nominated for Rochester’s Athena award in 2005 and was voted as one of Rochester’s most influential women in 2005.

NTID is the first and largest technological college in the world for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. One of eight colleges of RIT, NTID offers educational programs and access and support services to its 1,100 students from around the world who study, live, and socialize with 14,400 hearing students on RIT's Rochester, N.Y., campus.
