Suspect Already In Jail For Another Crime

SAN DIEGO -- A man in jail on suspicion of theft was charged with assault and battery in connection with the severe beating of a deaf teenager in City Heights, police said Thursday.

Jesse Russell Ross, 20, was booked this week in connection with the Aug. 13 attack on 18-year-old Loro Bureng, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Bureng was playing basketball at Rosa Parks Elementary School about 5:30 p.m. that day when several youths approached and jumped him for no apparent reason, SDPD Sgt. Gary Mitrovich said.

The victim suffered a broken nose, fractured eye socket and other injuries in the assault.

A tip from the public helped lead detectives to Ross, who was in custody in an alleged theft in El Cajon.

Police are still looking for the other assailants who attacked Bureng, Mitrovich said.
