From: BBC Sport, UK - Jun 6, 2006

Deaflympic gold medallist Jo Davison has broken the world deaf hammer record by almost two metres in her first competition of the season.
The Sussex athlete threw 48.36m at the Sussex Championships, surpassing the previous best of 46.85.

"I was happy to get the record, but a bit disappointed too because I want to break the 50-metre barrier," she said.

"That's my main target for the season, but I'm pleased because it was my first competition of the year."

Davison, who has joined the Shaftesbury Barnet club to compete in UK women's league matches, had a disrupted winter's training through illness and injury.

"My coach Charles Fogg has made a number of changes to my training plan which have made a huge difference to my performances," she said.

"I worked very hard on my technique and I could see an improvement with my throws during training sessions

"I want to go as far as I can in the UK rankings as a mainstream athlete. My target is a place in the top 20."
