(May 16, 2006) — A team of nine students from Rochester Institute of Technology's National Technical Institute for the Deaf won first place in a contest that challenged contestants to invent efficient vehicles that run on alternative fuel.

The Tour de Sol, held in Saratoga Springs north of Albany last weekend, featured cooking grease and solar-powered vehicles.

The NTID team entered two battery-powered bicycles in the "Around Town Vehicle Competition," where entrants design motorized vehicles that could replace conventional cars. The winning team was the team to finish the most laps after three hours. They won a $250 prize.

Participating students included Justin Bak, Travis Dickson, Steven Forney, Andrew Kucharski, Radames Marrero, Armin Mujkanovic, Sam Sherman, Kyle Trask and Matt White. Faculty members Scott Bellinger and Ron Till assisted.
