Big event for deaf hockey players

Hockey players from across Canada converging on Calgary early next month for a championship tournament have two things in common -- they're all deaf and they all want to win.

The deaf hockey players will be in Calgary May 4-6 to compete for a spot on the 2007 Canadian Men's Hockey Team for the 2007 Deaflympics.

The two-day round-robin tournament pitting teams from across the land will be watched by scouts who will build Team Canada for the Deaflympics set for February in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Like their Winter Olympic peers, Team Canada Deaflympic players are nearly unstoppable.

The team brought home back-to-back gold medals in 1999 and 2003. They're looking for a three-peat.

Calgary's Canadian Deaf Ice Hockey Championships is slated to go May 5-6 at the Centennial Arena, 2390 47 Ave. S.W.

More on the tournament is online at www.cdihc2006.ca.
