Friends and family remembered Tara McAvoy at a funeral service on Saturday morning.

The 18-year-old was a graduate of the Texas School for the Deaf and had won the title of Miss Deaf Texas in 2005. She completed one semester at Gallaudet University in Washington.

The service at Mission Funeral Home Serenity Chapel in South Austin gave McAvoy's loved ones a chance to share what they loved about her.

Mourners remembered her kindness to others. Blake Bryant said his son competed in wrestling with McAvoy's brother.

"Everyone that got up and talked about her talked about how beautiful she was and she really was a beautiful young lady and kids would come to the School for the Deaf and they wouldn't treat 'em that well, Tara did," Bryant said.

McAvoy died Monday after getting hit by a train in South Austin. She was walking alongside tracks at West Oltorf and Thornton Road when she was hit by the “snow plow" of a Union Pacific Train. The snow plow extends about a foot wider than the train engine itself.
