Congress recognizes retiring Gallaudet president

Members of the Senate and the House of Representatives approve dual resolutions

(WASHINGTON) The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a resolution congratulating Gallaudet University President I. King Jordan on his retirement and expressing appreciation for his dedicated service to Gallaudet, the deaf and hard of hearing community, and to individuals with disabilities.

The resolution, H. Res. 680, honors “Dr. I. King Jordan for his contributions to Gallaudet University and the deaf and hard of hearing community.” The document was submitted by Reps. Ron Kind (D-WI), Michael Oxley (R-OH), Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) and Ray LaHood (R-IL).

H. Res. 680 describes President Jordan as “an accomplished, respected leader who devoted his life to Gallaudet University and efforts to improve the quality of life for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, and individuals with disabilities.”

The Senate also approved a similar measure, S. Res. 411. Introduced by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), this resolution “recognizes the achievement of Gallaudet University; its leadership, faculty and students; and expresses appreciation to Dr. I. King Jordan for his many years of dedicated service to Gallaudet University, to the deaf and hard of hearing community, and to all individuals with disabilities.”

According to S. Res. 411, “Gallaudet University grants more bachelor's degrees to deaf people than any other institution of higher learning in the world, is the only such institution serving primarily deaf and hard of hearing students, and provides groundbreaking research in the field of deafness.”

Both documents are now part of the Congressional Record.
