AG Bell Arts and Science Program Awards $26,540 in Financial Aid

Funds support arts and science exploration for 40 students who are deaf or hard of hearing

Washington, DC, August 25, 2005 - The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) Arts and Science Financial Aid Program has awarded $26,540 in financial aid to 40 students who are deaf or hard of hearing and use spoken language to communicate. The students, who represent 11 states and Canada, participate in a variety of after school, weekend, or summer programs in arts and science programs.

"AG Bell recognizes that extracurricular activities offer children who are deaf or hard of hearing valuable opportunities to interact with peers who have similar interests," said K. Todd Houston, Ph.D., Executive Director/CEO. "AG Bell's financial aid program gives students an opportunity to explore a range of interests– from aerospace engineering and digital movie-making to voice lessons, piano and drama."

The AG Bell Arts and Science Financial Aid Program offers awards ranging from $140 to $2,000 for students, ages 6 to 19, identified with moderate to profound hearing loss since birth or before acquiring spoken language. Award recipients use these funds to participate in arts and science programs sponsored by museums, art or music centers, science camps, and dance and theater workshops.
