The competition doesn't happen until August, but Sunday some of the contestants got a jump start on the preparation.

Sunday evening, the girls began arriving at the new Wingate Inn on Grand Central Avenue, ready to start classes this week.

They will go over public speaking, make-up tips and interviewing skills.

"It's a great experience. I've learned a lot even though I was raised deaf. Teaching others, they realize they really don't know a lot about the deaf community or the culture. It's a great experience teaching them," says Linda Phillips, Miss West Virginia 2003.

Monday, a group from Lee's Studio will be on hand for make-up and hair demonstrations.

The pageant itself will take place on August 6 in Clarksburg.

The winner will receive a scholarship and a chance to compete in the 2006 Miss Deaf America Pageant in New Orleans.
