2005 Charter Day festivities planned for April 8 & 9

Gallaudet University celebrates the 141st anniversary of the signing of Gallaudet's Charter by President Abraham Lincoln on April 8, 1864, thus making "Honest Abe" the first Patron Ex Officio of our University. In observance of this milestone, the Gallaudet University Alumni Association and Gallaudet University will sponsor several events next month.

Friday, April 8

10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Washburn Arts Building
Gallaudet Treasures Part II Show

11 a.m. – 12 p.m., Student Union Building
Community Presentation, titled "The Relevance of Signacy Skills to Literacy skills: From a Language Planning Perspective" by Dr. Stephen M. Nover, '78, 2005 Award Recipient

6:30 p.m., Foster Auditorium
"Dr. Hand" Movie

Saturday, April 9
11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Peikoff Alumni House
36th Annual Charter Day Awards and Luncheon Program

Dr. Benjamin "Ben" Bahan, '78, will serve as master of ceremonies. The following individuals will be recognized for outstanding achievements at the 36th annual Charter Day Luncheon and Awards Program:

GUAA Outstanding Young Alumnus Award—Steven A. Florio, '92 (Rhode Island);
GUAA Pauline "Polly" Peikoff "Service to Others" Award—Timothy "Timo" Owens, '79 (Kentucky); LCCF Alice Cogswell Award—Dr. Steven M. Nover, '78 (New Mexico);
LCCF Edward Miner Gallaudet Award—Eiichi and Nariko Mitsui (Japan)
GUAA President's Award – Ralph Fernandez, '92 (Maryland)
GUAA President's Award – Free State (Maryland) Chapter
GUAA President's Award – NorCal (California) Chapter

Advance reservations for the Saturday luncheon are required since seating is limited. The cost is $35.00 per person. Please make check or money order payable to GUAA and send to Daphne Cox, '82 at the Gallaudet address. The deadline for reservations with payment is March 28, 2005.
