"What Are You Deaf?"

a solo play written by and starring actor/writer/performance artist

This new work premiered at Deaf West Theatre Co., Los Angles.  It is an insightful, comedic portrayal of a man who is both Deaf and African-American, confronting the sometimes absurd misconceptions that transpire between the deaf and hearing.

LOCATION/TRANSPORTATION:
The center is just 4 blocks from Union Square.  It is a short walk from the BART/Muni POWELL and MONTGOMERY stations.  The Center is close to Moscone Convention Center.  It is on Third St. between Mission and Howard.  (in the same block as the Sony Metreon).

There are several garages and lots in the area for parking.  The largest one is the Downtown 5th and Mission Garage which is close by.  (between 4th and 5th along Mission St)


ABOUT THE PERFORMER and THE PLAY:
"CJ" Jones  is a producer, director, writer, actor, comedian, teacher, and an  internationally known deaf  entertainer.  He has been captivating and delighting audiences young and old for over 25
years with his lively performances. CJ   has traveled with the National Theater of the Deaf and toured with  "Children of a Lesser God" on Broadway.  He has also appeared on the Broadway stage, in television, video, and on the big screen.

In "What Are You ...Deaf?"  Jones blends his unique style of visual imagery and storytelling.  Combining voice, American Sign Language and mime,  recorded music, and multi-media projections, he paints colorful, riveting pictures of his life experiences.   He reveals  what it was like to grow up in a tough St. Louis neighborhood in the shadow of his Golden Gloves champion Boxer Deaf dad, and on through the challenges faced during his quest to make it as a comedian and actor in Hollywood.

Known for the past 30 years as a presenter of preeminent Deaf talent, DEAFmedia is returning for its seventh annual production in association with Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.  "DEAFmedia Presents  An Evening With..."  is a showcase for prominent and exceptional emerging Deaf artists.

This production  is Deaf performance in American Sign Language for the enjoyment of all--the Bay Area Deaf Community, students of American Sign Language and for the hearing audience who would like a new way to see the world. Voice interpretation provides full access for the whole audience.
