------------------------
PLEASE READ THIS!
Subtitles @ Your Local Cinema receive accessible listings directly from cinema head offices, but we can take NO responsibility for postponed or cancelled shows. If cinemas inform us of changes, we will tell you via this website, which is updated daily. If they don't inform us, we can't inform you. Many cinemas schedules are "SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTIFICATION".

Sometimes the files necessary for a subtitled or described film are not available, or are not delivered to the cinema on time. The only way to be 100% sure is to check with the ACTUAL cinema before you plan a visit. But DOUBLE check, preferably with a manager. We recommend that you should always request confirmation that a show is definitely on.

Subtitled and audio described cinema enables people with less than perfect hearing or vision to enjoy film presented in its original and best form - the cinema. Almost a quarter of UK cinemas (over 130) can now screen most popular releases with subtitles & audio description.

Remember:
"It is not tragic to have a disability.
Disability only becomes a tragedy when society fails to provide the things one needs to lead one's life"

------------------------
Also on the website:
Site map here: http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/news.html
Media reports here: http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/press.html

Around 8 out of every 10 cinema releases at any one time are available with subtitles for deaf/hearing impaired people, and audio description for blind/visually impaired people. The subtitle/description 'files' are supplied to the cinema on a separate CD-Rom and automatically synchronise with the film when played. Around a quarter of UK cinemas (132) have the necessary equipment to read these files and most of them screen 'accessible' shows every week. Full details of shows nationwide can be found here: http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/index.html

It's a quiet revolution in the world of sensory impaired people, thanks to the cinema and film distribution industries, technology companies, organisations representing disabled people, and the people themselves - thousands aired their views to the UK Film Council, when informed of the UK Film Council's proposal to fund 50% of the cost of cinema equipment.

Organised nationwide campaigning and publicity of accessible shows helped to bring it all together and ensure it always stayed on the agenda of the many bodies involved. All working together to make it happen - and quickly.

------------------------
Why do some 'subtitle equipped' cinemas not show all available subtitled films, at sensible times?

We cannot 'force' a cinema to enable people with less than perfect hearing to enjoy their services, we can only ask them to. And we do, constantly. It's our job to create awareness of the problem, suggest solutions, and to empower people to do something about it.

We recommend that people contact cinemas in their local area and request better access for people with sensory impairments. Request that they become 'accessible', by installing a digital subtitle system and screening regular subtitled shows.

Informing cinemas in your local area of the need for accessible cinema makes them aware and reminds them what they should be aiming for - access to their services for people with sensory impairments. If everyone did this it would really help the situation.

Ideally, cinemas should view subtitled shows as they do disabled ramps, lifts, loop systems etc. - NOT there to make a profit, but to enable people in their communities, who need a little extra help, to enjoy a cinemas' services.

If a cinema needs more info, direct them to our website - there's info on government grants available, digital systems available, where to purchase and more.

It's rare that a film is released in a form that ALL cinemas can screen - the 'older' form of subtitling, where the subtitles are 'etched' onto the actual film reel. The last one was 'The Polar Express' (not counting 'foreign language' films like Passion of the Christ, Hero, Amelie etc). The vast majority of future 'mainstream' cinema releases will ONLY be available with subtitles in the digital format from now on.

In the digital format, the subtitles are projected separately, overlaying the film on the screen. Cinema audio description, for visually impaired people, is ONLY available in the digital format (details below). A full list of all subtitled and audio described mainstream films coming soon is available on the website: http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/coming.soon.html

The digital format can also broadcast audio description, for visually impaired people. The on-screen action is described in detail through personal headphones. This feature has no affect on an audience's enjoyment of a film and can be left 'on' all of the time. Every show can be an audio described show.
