Volleyball: USA Women Sweep Italy, Capture Bronze Medal at 2005 Deaflympics

MELBOURNE, Australia – The USA women's indoor volleyball team won the bronze medal at the 2005 Deaflympics Thursday evening by posting a 3-0 win over Italy.

The USA women, who finished the tournament with a record of 4-3, won the match by scores of 26-24, 25-11, 25-19.

It marked the third medal in four tries by USA volleyball teams competing at the Deaflympics and represents 12.5 percent of the total medals won (24) by American teams in all sports.

On Sunday, Jan. 9, American men's and women's beach volleyball teams captured silver and bronze medals, respectively, on the final day of competition in the sand.

In the women's indoor gold medal match, Ukraine swept Japan, 25-19, 25-10, 25-20, to finish the tournament with a perfect 7-0 record.

On the men's side, Ukraine made it a clean sweep of the gold medals thanks to a 3-1 win over Italy in Thursday night's final match (25-23, 27-29, 25-21, 25-18). Iran captured the men's bronze medal with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 victory over Russia.

The USA men finished eighth overall after losing to Japan in the seventh-place match, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) on Tuesday, Jan. 11. The Americans, who ranked fourth in Pool B after the preliminary rounds, finished the tournament with a record of 2-4 overall.
