Team USA wins Deaflympics match

Melbourne, Australia -- The U.S. women's Deaflympics soccer team, including Oregon School for the Deaf graduate Kelli Beechy, won its opening-round match Thursday against Denmark 5-2.

Beechy, 23, plays left midfield for the 22-member American team. She attended Sprague High School before switching to OSD. She attended college at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., where she played soccer, basketball and softball.

The Americans' goals came from Virginia Keeler, who scored two, Katie Romano had two and Erin Coppedge contributed one.

Team USA next will face Norway on Saturday in the second round.
