GB women suffer football knockout

From: BBC Sport, UK - Jan 14, 2005

The Great Britain women's football team were denied a place in the Deaflympics final after suffering a heartbreaking defeat to Russia in Melbourne.

The sides were deadlocked at 2-2 after extra-time of the semi-final but Britain lost out 5-4 on penalties with Roanna Simmons missing the vital kick.

Russia twice went ahead but Susan McKeown and Lisa Jones were able to reply either side of half-time.

Britain face Denmark in the third-place play-off on Sunday.

Britain's swimmers also had a disappointing day with two athletes just missing out on medals.

Richard Breen came fourth in the 100m backstroke while Lindsay Cummings just missed out on bronze in the 200m butterfly.

The men's 400m freestyle relay team claimed sixth in their final, but Sarah McCrea won the 50m freestyle B final and Niall Nesbitt won silver in the 100m backstroke B final.
