Deaflympics - Aussie men off

Australia's men have had a storming start to the 2005 Deaflympics in Melbourne, thrashing the Chinese team 108-70 in the opening round at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Thursday night.

Sam Quinn was unstoppable for the Aussies with 28 points and 14 rebounds. He was well supported by Ben Magill on 20 points and five assists.

Bing Xu and Ligang Zhang kept China in the game with 24 and 20 points respectively.

The Aussie men play their next game against Slovakia on Saturday night at 9pm.

The Australian women were not so lucky in their opening game, going down to Greece 59-77.

Prudence Harpham was best for the Australians with 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Lisa Westwood was also vital for Australia with 14 points, a massive 19 rebounds and five steals.

Konstantina Balkoglou was best for Greece with 25 points and Stavroula Kotsirea had 21 points.

The Australian women's next game is against China on Friday night at 7pm.
