Five As for deaf student

Dedicated matriculant Kashveera Chanderjith of Kharwastan, Chatsworth, proves there is no obstacle to success, not even being deaf.

The cheerful 17-year-old, who attended Crawford College, Dur-ban, matriculated with an exemption and five distinctions.

Securing As in English, Afrikaans, biology, accounting and business economics were as easy as pie.

She has maintained her excellent academic results throughout her schooling career and has already received a contract offer to train with accounting giants Deloitte & Touche after she has completed her studies in 2008.

"I hope to be a chartered accountant and know . . . I will succeed. I have my friends and family to thank for constantly helping me," said Kashveera, who was born deaf.

Over the years Kashveera has learnt to speak and communicate without the use of sign language and instead lip reads. She has obtained full academic colours this year as well as a special award for her determination to achieve.
