Workshop raises attention about deaf awareness

In honor of Deaf Awareness Week in Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak Community College has been sponsoring seminars and workshops.

Friday's workshop focused on a successful mentorship program in Kenya.

A former teacher at the Colorado Springs School for the Deaf and Blind recently returned from a trip to Kenya. She says the experience inspired her to teach sign language again. "Deaf people are just people. Even though the languages are different --we have sign language. We need to be aware that sign language in other countries is different just like spoken language is different in every country," said retired teacher Jeanette Scheppach.

The two hour event informed those in attendance about the financial and physical need for sign language instructors in African countries like Kenya.
