BALTIMORE, Md. - — The Johns Hopkins volleyball team split its first two games of the Battlefield Classic Friday night in Gettsyburg, PA. The team defeated Lycoming in five games, but lost to Gallaudet also in five games. Hopkins is now 2-1.

In their first match of the day the Blue Jays were able to outlast Lycoming. After winning game one 30-27, Johns Hopkins surrendered games two and three to Lycoming 30-26, 30-28 before taking game four 30-23 and forcing the deciding game five.

Trailing 4-3, the Blue Jays notched the next two points for a 5-4 advantage. A Kelly Watson kill brought the Warriors back even, but Johns Hopkins rolled off the next three points for an 8-5 lead. Lycoming tallied the next two to draw within one. Trailing 10-8, Jana Reitz had a kill to make it 10-9 in favor of JHU, but the Blue Jays scored the next two points to stretch the lead to 12-9 and force a Lycoming timeout. The Warriors made it 12-10 but that is as close as they could get. Kills by Adri Eisen (New York City, NY/Trinity) and Katie O'Callaghan (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) set up match point, and Jen Hajj (Boca Raton, FL/Pope John Paul II) put the match away with an ace.

In the second game of the day the Blue Jays were downed by Gallaudet in five games, 22-30, 30-23, 30-22, 27-30, 15-12, to prevent the Jays from being perfect on the day.

The Blue Jays will continue to participate in the Battlefield Classic on Saturday
