DEAF and visually impaired film fans in West Cumbria will be among the first in the country to benefit from new technology to help them enjoy the cinema.

The six-screen Plaza complex at Dunmail Park won a share of 500,000 lottery funding to install new equipment that will show films with subtitles and provide special audio discs for the visually impaired.

On Monday at 4.40pm, Spiderman 2 will be the first subtitled film to be shown at the cinema and after that, subtitled films will be shown every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Manager Helen Taylor said the Plaza was the first cinema in Cumbria to get the equipment and local charities and organisations were being told about it.

The Plaza already had a loop system for the hard of hearing but the new audio discs should make it easier for visually impaired people to follow films.
