Cinemas improve services for deaf

From: Cambridge Evening News, UK - Aug 10, 2004

THREE cinemas across Mid Anglia now have improved facilities for those with hearing difficulties.

Cineworld cinemas in Cambridge and Huntingdon and Cambridge's Vue cinema can now show subtitled screenings of the latest blockbuster films, thanks the installation of digital subtitling equipment.

Research by RNID - the largest charity representing the nine million deaf and hard-of-hearing people in the UK - shows that five million people across Great Britain regularly use subtitles to enjoy television.

The installation of the equipment means that local deaf and hard-of-hearing cinemagoers can now enjoy big screen films with friends and family.

The demand to see the latest cinema releases with subtitles is so high that a dedicated website, www.yourlocalcinema .com has been established to provide comprehensive listing information on subtitled screenings across the country.
