PADANG BESAR: A 49-year-old Felda settler from the Mata Ayer scheme was killed when he was run over by the southbound Langkawi Express train here.

Abdul Nayan, said to be partially deaf, was believed to have been flung 30m away on impact in the 5.40pm incident yesterday.

He was riding a motorcycle and was taking a shortcut to see friends at the Felda Rimba Mas scheme when the incident occurred.

According to his friend Abu Hassan Saman, 49, who was the pillion rider, he shouted at Nayan when he saw the train but his friend did not hear or see the train.

The incident caused a three-hour delay in the Padang Besar-Kuala Lumpur Langkawi Express service, which departs from the border town at 5.30pm daily.

The damaged train was towed back to the Padang Besar station where it was fitted with a new engine.

Padang Besar KTM officer Sazali Mohd Nor said the KTM locomotive would require a 200m buffer to come to a full stop after emergency brakes were applied.
