Online directory of deaf services launched

From: Ireland Online - Dublin,Ireland - Jun 11, 2004

Ireland's first online directory of services for the deaf and hard of hearing was launched today.

The website (www.irishdeaf.com) is the first online resource in Ireland designed as a one-stop-shop for the Irish deaf community.

The directory contains details of deaf clubs and organisations around Ireland, as well as news, listings of subtitled media, jobs and courses, catering for the deaf and hard of hearing community in Ireland - both North and South.

Initially mooted as part of European Year of People with Disabilities, the directory is the brainchild of Stephen Gilligan, an Irish entrepreneur who has been profoundly deaf since birth.

Minister of State at the Department the Taoiseach, Mary Hanafin officially launched the directory at Government Buildings.

The directory is available online now and includes relevant information and contact details for deaf clubs and organisations, schools for the deaf, audiology units and hearing aid centres, interpreters, email groups and more.

The Irish Deaf.com book is available through Eason bookstores, Citizens Information Centres nationwide, Public Libraries as well as some deaf clubs and organisations listed on Irish Deaf.com website and through tourist offices – both North and South.
