PLEASE READ THIS!

Subtitles @ Your Local Cinema receive accessible listings directly from cinema head offices, but we can take NO responsibility for postponed or cancelled shows. If cinemas inform us of changes, we will tell you via the website, which is updated daily. If they don't inform us, we can't inform you.

Many cinemas schedules are "SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTIFICATION". Sometimes a subtitled or described film is not delivered to the cinema on time. The only way to be 100% sure is to check with the ACTUAL cinema before you plan a visit. But DOUBLE check, preferably with a manager. We recommend that you should always request confirmation that a show is definitely on.

The Passion of the Christ (18) (Ireland 15pg) Subtitled EVERYWHERE.

This film was filmed in the ancient languages of Latin and Aramaic and will be shown with English subtitles wherever it is screened. Click here for dates and times in your area: http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/passion.of.christ.html

WARNING!
This film is EXTREMELY brutal and violent, in its depiction of the torture of Jesus. To date, two people have died from heart attacks whilst watching this film. And one has confessed to a murder!(?) You have been warned...
More info on this controversial film here: http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/passion.of.christ.html

Spooky, but slightly amusing antidote: Jim Caviezel, who plays Jesus, was struck by lightning while filming. Apparently, there was "smoke coming out of Caviezel's ears!"

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The Barbarian Invasions (18)
This film is French language, and will be shown with English subtitles wherever it is screened.
"A gripping psychological comedy drama touches on love, faith, family and mortality".

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Zatôichi (18)
This film is Japanese language, and will be shown with English subtitles wherever it is screened.
Zatôichi wanders through 19th-century Japan avenging the weak and oppressed with his razor-sharp samurai sword. A walking contradiction, he's a blind man armed with the skill and guile of a master swordsman. Art as action, action as art: it's blood-spattered poetry. With a body count.
"ARTERY-SPURTING VIOLENCE"

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Subtitled films coming soon:
Bridget Jones 2, Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, Shrek 2, Alexander, Catwoman, Troy, Shark Tale, Thunderbirds, Van Helsing and many more. Full list here:
http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/coming.soon.html

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Note: Subtitled films can come in three formats:

1) Foreign language films, with English subtitles.
These can be screened in any cinema, and have English subtitles at all times, wherever they are screened (Examples: Passion of Christ, Amelie, Crouching Tiger etc).

2) 'Hard captioned' films.
Becoming quite rare nowadays, these can be screened in any cinema. Subtitles are etched onto the actual film print. Only 5 to 10 prints are produced, Cinema chains share the prints, and 'tour' them around their cinema sites. A subtitled show usually only plays for one day, at one time, in each cinema. (Examples: The recent Matrix, Harry Potter, James Bond and Star Wars Films, and Scooby Doo 2).

3) 'Digitally subtitled' films.
Almost every major film is released in this format, but only cinemas with digital subtitle equipment can screen them. There are currently 30 cinemas in the UK with these facilities. There will be over 100 by the end of 2004. Cinemas with this equipment can also provide an audio description service to visually impaired people - a narrator explains what's happening on screen, through personal headphones. (Examples: Lord of the Rings 1, 2 & 3, Along Came Polly, The Last Samurai, Cold Mountain, Master and Commander, Love Actually, Kill Bill, Finding Nemo and many more).

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

NOTE:
We cannot 'force' a cinema to become accessible so that everyone can enjoy their services. We can only ask them to. And we do, constantly. It's our job to create awareness of the problem, suggest solutions, and to empower people to do something about it. We recommend that people contact cinemas in their local area and request better access for people with sensory impairments.

Request that your local cinema becomes 'accessible', by installing a digital subtitle & audio description system and then regularly screening the latest 'accessible' releases. Over 150 films have been released in the past few years with digital cinema subtitles and/or audio description. Full information on systems available from DTS and Dolby here:
http://www.yourlocalcinema.com/dts.dolby.systems.html

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Have you ever tried to lip-read Spiderman? Or an animated fish? It's not easy. Not everyone has perfect hearing and many people need subtitles to enjoy a film.

Subtitled and audio described cinema enables people with less than perfect hearing or vision to enjoy film presented in its original and best form - the cinema. Digital 'access' equipment enables any cinema to regularly screen almost every popular release with subtitles & audio description. It's available to cinemas now.

Subtitles are usually produced before a film is released in the cinema. The same basic subtitle 'text files' are later used for the DVD, video and TV release. But cinema films are rarely screened with subtitles. In 2004, 1 in 7 UK cinemas will catch up with other film media and become more accessible.

NEWS! 78 more accessible cinemas on the way!
"When 'silent' movies were replaced by 'talkies' over 70 years ago, people with visual impairments began to enjoy the cinema experience, but for those with hearing impairments, the loss of captions on the screen to explain the plot was the end of their cinema enjoyment. This year, over 100 cinemas nationwide will become fully accessible again for people with sight and hearing problems."
