Club for the deaf

From: North Devon Gazette & Advertiser - Barnstaple,England,UK - Feb 11, 2004

A SOCIAL group for the deaf and hard of hearing is being launched in Barnstaple next week.

It is hoped that local people of all ages with hearing difficulties will join in with the wide range of events that are planned.

The activities kick off on Wednesday, February 18 with a meeting at Let's Go Superbowl in Braunton Road at 7.30pm.

As well as ten-pin bowling, this first meeting will give the opportunity for people to say what sort of activities they want included in the schedule. Group organiser Jonathan Wallace, who has hearing difficulties himself, believes such a club is long overdue.

He said: "There are quite a few people deaf people scattered around North Devon. It can be hard for them to get together and mix with other deaf people.

"This is something that North Devon has been lacking for some time." Other events planned include a special signed art exhibition at The Tate Gallery in St. Ives on Sunday, February 22.

The group has also reserved tickets to a "signed" performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat at Barnstaple's Queen's Theatre in March.
