NTID WINS GRANT FOR INTERPRETER TRAINING

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Nov. 4-The New York State Education Department has awarded $500,000 to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), one of eight colleges at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), to continue professional development training for sign language interpreters who work in elementary and secondary schools across the state.

"We'll continue training the approximately 1,000 interpreters in New York through a variation of workshops, American Sign Language classes, mentoring, distance learning, and lending libraries," said Marilyn Mitchell, director of NTID's Center for the Preparation of Educational Interpreters grant project, which has received $4 million in state funding since 1998. "We will also help prepare interpreters for the state's new Educational Interpreter Certification process."
