From: CubaNet, FL - Nov 6, 2003

HAVANA, Cuba, November 4 (www.cubanet.org) -- Housing officials have threatened to fine a deaf-mute woman if she and her eight-year-old daughter don't leave a house declared to be an illegal residence.

The house in question, located in the town of Rosa de la Bayamesa, belongs to Isidro Pompa, but he is said not to have occupied it for 20 years.

Ruth Cordovi Lara, 42, who has been living in the house, took her case to the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party, but she was advised nothing could be done.

Inspectors from the government's Urban Reform office told her she faced a 500 peso fine is she did not leave the house.
