Deaf School Superintendent Named

From: KAIT, AR - Jul 23, 2003

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- An interim superintendent is taking the helm of the Arkansas School for the Deaf.

The move comes after the state attorney general issued an opinion that one person cannot lead both the Arkansas School for the Deaf and the Arkansas School for the Blind. The opinion was requested after the schools' board decided last month to ask for the resignation of deaf school superintendent Sandra Lunestad.

The board had made blind school superintendent Jim Hill interim superintendent in her place. At the meeting yesterday , the board voted 4-0 to remove Hill from the interim job and offer it to the deaf school's former middle school principal and curriculum director Marcella Dalla Rosa.

The board cut Dalla Rosa's position on June 24th to save money. Board members have defended the move to combine the positions, saying they were trying to spend money more efficiently by paying only one superintendent to run both schools, which have a combined enrollment of about 250.
