CHENNAI JUNE 4. A 22-year-old deaf and dumb youth has been hospitalised with serious injuries in the head after he was brutally beaten up by a fast food restaurant worker at Adambakkam last night.

Nelson, employed in a leather unit at Alandur and staying at Pallavaram, along with his friend had dinner at Anand Chettinad Hotel — a roadside fast food eatery.

He gave a 50-rupee note to pay the bill, when the cashier and his co-workers picked up a quarrel with him over a trivial issue.

Even as Nelson's friend tried to intervene, one of the workers pulled out a log and assaulted Nelson. His friend rang up a welfare centre and volunteers rushed the profusely-bleeding Nelson to the Chromepet GH, where he was treated and admitted to ward no. 8.

Attempts by the eatery owner and even other merchants' associations to allegedly arrive at a "compromise" did not succeed as volunteers from the welfare centre insisted on a case being registered.

Following a complaint, a FIR was filed against Siva, who assaulted Nelson, and he was later remanded to the central prison for 15 days.

Volunteers at the welfare centre hoped that the victim would get a compensation at least for his medical expenses.
