ROADMAP TO MOVIE ACCESS
From an interview with Omaha's star advocate Bob Burns who raised half the money for a MoPix installation (AMC matched the funds), now available in text online at the MoPix site:

"The process came together so fast that I was astounded. When I began the drive for funding in late January I hoped we could have MOPIX by summer, and we managed to have it by May 1 for the X Men movie. It was very personally gratifying. When we had the dedication and I met Blind and Deaf children who had just gone to "Finding Nemo", and they and their parents were coming up to me to thank me, it was as great a thrill as I have ever had."

IS YOUR DATE FEELING LEFT OUT?
We often hear from husbands or wives, girlfriends of boyfriends or kids of same that they all enjoy going to movies now that one member of their family has access via captioning or description. Why not make it a family affair? If your wife/husband/child uses the Rear Window system, perhaps try the DVS Theatrical system the next time you're at a MoPixed movie, just ask for the description headphones. There's more to description than "Exit stage left." Consider this sample from Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo (Marlin, clownfish Nemo's father, has just engaged the help of sea turtles, led by Crush, on his quest to find Nemo):

"Marlin peers behind Crush's shell. Hundreds of sea turtles swim together in the current. The red, orange, and brown-shelled turtles flap their long flippers and glide forward. The channel of swift moving water glows a light-greenish-blue and runs along the sea in a tube-like formation. Three tiny fish jump in and shoot forward. Crush looks back at Marlin. As the current blasts downward, Marlin clings to Crush's shell. They zoom around a bend, and Crush rolls into a three sixty turn. As the water calms, Crush glides onto his back and faces Marlin..."

Closed captioning and description of all films provided by the Media Access Group at WGBH, a nonprofit division of Boston public broadcaster WGBH.  The Rear Window Captioning and DVS Theatrical systems were developed by WGBH to make feature films accessible the date films open in theaters nationwide— and during regular showtimes— to movie fans who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind or visually impaired.

For more information on the WGBH's Motion Picture Access (MoPix) efforts, including how to encourage a theater in your area to install the access systems, please visit www.mopix.org, e-mail access@wgbh.org or call 617 300-3400 v, 617 300-2489 TTY.

Thanks to AMC Theatres, Crown Theatres, Famous Players, Loews Cineplex, Mann Theatres, and National Amusements Theatres, IMAX and OMNIMAX theatres, Disney themeparks, Busch Gardens Adventure Parks, SeaWorld, the Hollywood studios and to all the movie fans out there.
