Deaf pedestrian struck and killed by police car

EMPORIA, Va. -- A deaf man was struck and killed by a police car while crossing an unlit street, state police said.

Rodney White, 28, was wearing dark clothing when he was hit by the car being driven by a Greensville County sheriff's deputy late Sunday night. The officer was passing through Emporia to respond to a domestic call when the collision occurred, state police spokesman Sgt. D.S. Carr said.

Carr said the car had its lights and sirens activated at the time. White was transported to Greensville Memorial Hospital where he died shortly before midnight, he said.

Carr said Greensville Sheriff Wyatt Lee asked state police to handle the investigation into the incident.
