Signing Stars to perform Friday

RAPID CITY - The Canyon Lake Signing Stars will perform their Second Annual Spring Concert at 2 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the Canyon Lake Elementary School gym.

Vicki L. Lea, deaf educator at Canyon Lake School, said the spring program is the final performance for the year and will include nine songs from the "Disneymania" compact disc and a patriotic song.

Instructors choreograph sign language to the musical pieces, using songs that the children enjoy.

The 60-member Signing Stars group consists of first- through fifth-graders at Canyon Lake Elementary School who participate in the school's Sign Club.

Sign Club is offered to all students as an extracurricular activity during the school year to teach the children sign language.

"We have it here because we have deaf and hard-of-hearing students and it encourages students to participate academically and socially in the classroom (with students who are deaf or hard of hearing)," Lea said.

The event is free and open to the public.
