(May 5, 2003) -- Cochlear implants -- devices that enable some deaf people to hear sounds again -- will be discussed by a panel of experts Tuesday at this month's evening meeting of Self Help for Hard or Hearing people.

Individual experiences with the devices -- which are surgically implanted in the ear -- vary, as do the implants.

Among those discussing the implants will be Dr. Mark Orlando of the University of Rochester Medical Center, and a panel of recipients to talk about their experiences, including the pros and cons of their use.

The meeting, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, at East Avenue and Westminster Road. The meeting will be captioned as well as interpreted in sign language. Audio loop equipment will also be available.
