Golf event to help school for deaf

From: Whittier Daily News, CA - May 13, 2003

WHITTIER -- Openings are available for the ninth annual Oralingua School for the Hearing Impaired Golf Tournament fund-raiser on June 2 at La Canada Flintridge Country Club.

Entry fees include golf cart, green, lunch and dinner, and range from $1,000 sponsorships to $100 cart sponsorships.

Oralingua School, located at St. Matthias Church for 34 years, utilizes aural/oral philosophy and methodology, teaching deaf children to listen and speak without use of sign language or lip-reading.

Children are fitted with hearing aids or technologically advanced cochlear implants to amplify residual hearing. They receive highly specialized training in speech and listening along with age-appropriate academics in very small classes.

The golf tournament raises funds to support the specialized program at the school.
