Deaf Woman Raped In Brooklyn

From: WABC-TV, NY - May 16, 2003

(East New York-WABC, May 16, 2003) —A young Brooklyn woman is recovering after being viciously assaulted by four men. Police say she couldn't even scream for help because she is deaf, and can barely speak.

Less than 24 hours after this attack, the basement doors of the abandoned building where the attack took place were still unlocked. Police believe that is how this gang of rapists entered the building.

A dark, empty, abandoned apartment in the East New York section of Brooklyn is where four men viciously raped a 21-year-old woman at 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon on Thursday. Because the victim is deaf and mute, her calls for help could not be heard.

The unidentified victim was heading to the subway when a man she may have known approached her and forced her inside the abandoned building where she was repeatedly attacked. The basement door was left unlocked.

After the assault, the four men took off but the woman was able to escape and go get help. She was able to only give police a partial description of her attackers.

The building where the attack took place is owned by the department of housing and urban development. Apparently, the building has been vacant for several years. Police are hoping the victim's description of her attackers, plus DNA evidence leads to an arrest.
