Students at the Texas School for the Deaf did more than study for a scholarship, they helped raise the money.

The school held its annual Fun Festival Saturday. The goal is to pump up scholarship money for students.

Parents and children donated money for rides and games.

Educators said it's an event that builds camaraderie.

"It's a residential school, but about half the students actually go home every night while the other half live here at the school's dormitories. It's important for the parents to come and meet the students here, be with their kids, mingle and meet other parents and they get a lot of information and issues settled and there are different educational issues too," Robert Giuntoli, with the Texas School for the Deaf PTA, said.

Among the issues is the state's proposed $4 million cut to the school's budget.

Parents are planning to rally next week at the Capitol to protest.
