Deaf awareness courses to be held

From: Southbridge News, UK - Apr 23, 2003

A special course in deafness awareness is being run at a closure-threatened community centre in Stourbridge.

The sessions on deaf awareness and communication tactics with deaf people is being run at the Robin Woods Centre, in Scotts Road, from Tuesday, April 29.

The two certificates make up two parts of the four components of the Foundation Certificate in Deaf Studies. The course, which last for 10 weeks, is being run in conjunction with the languages department of Stourbridge College.

Organisers said the sessions would not only be useful to people wanting to take up deaf studies, but also for employers and staff looking to fulfil obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act.

Owners of the Robin Woods Centre, the Diocese of Worcester, announced plans to sell off the building for housing in March. The centre has been a home for voluntary and community groups for the past 20 years. Anyone wanting details of the course can call the centre on 01384 390290.
