City man guilty of rape charge

From: Berkshire Eagle, MA - Apr 2, 2003

PITTSFIELD -- A Berkshire County jury yesterday convicted a city man of raping a 30-year-old woman almost four years ago.

The jury deliberated for roughly four hours before finding 55-year-old Donjon Cameron, whose last known address was on Francis Avenue, guilty of two counts of rape.

The woman, who has been deaf since birth, used sign language to testify this week that on Sept. 13, 1999, Cameron attacked her in an apartment on North Street.

She said, with the aid of a court-certified interpreter, that Cameron threw her to the ground, dragged her into a chair, raped her and then laughed at her when the assault was over.

Cameron denied that he raped the woman and claimed the allegations were an act of revenge.

Several days after the attack, the woman reported it and went to Berkshire Medical Center for an examination. She still had visible bruises and scratches, according to trial testimony.

Following the allegations, Cameron fled to Florida and was returned last year to answer the charges.

Judge Thomas J. Curley Jr. revoked Cameron's bail after the verdict was announced and scheduled sentencing for Monday, April 14, at 2 p.m.
