Sign language lessons

Registration is due by March 26 for the next sign language classes offered by the Society for Handicapped Children and Adults of Stanislaus County.

The eight-week session is set to begin March 31. Beginning Level 1 classes are scheduled Monday nights, Tuesday mornings and Thursday nights, and beginning Level 2 classes are scheduled Tuesday mornings and Tuesday nights.

The society also is offering a class for parents or guardians of deaf and hard-of-hearing children. According to the society, class topics will include deaf culture, parenting strategies and ideas for teaching signs.

The society's sign language classes are open to anyone interested in learning how to communicate with people who are deaf or hard of hearing; there are some restrictions on children's participation.

Classes are set to take place at the society's office, 2047 Tully Road, Modesto. The cost is $29 per person or $59 for families.
