MP welcomes funding boost for deaf and hard of hearing

From: This Is St. Helens, UK - Mar 18, 2003

DAVE Watts has welcomed a Government announcement of more than £94 million funding for English audiology departments, which should lead to the introduction of digital hearing aids in all areas.

The St Helens North MP had been pressing Ministers on this issue after being contacted by local constituents and hearing support groups like the Royal Institute for the Deaf.

He said: "Many deaf and hard of hearing people in the town were disappointed that St Helens was not included in the first digital pilot and I have been working with the local Hospital Trust to make sure that the new system was introduced as quickly as possible in St Helens. The recent announcement of extra funding should provide the resources needed for other areas like St Helens to modernise and provide digital hearing systems in the future".
